The Wing Explosion

Do you ever wonder what the world did with all of the surplus chicken wings before the dawn of buffalo wings? Me neither. However I do know what we do with them now. We eat them in one of the many wing-themed restaurants that are popping up across the county. Ten years ago living in central Illinois I had never heard of buffalo wings. Now I have eaten them at many places including Hooter’s, Quaker Steak and Lube, Buffalo Wild Wings, Wing Stop and Wing Zone.

Fraternity Kitchen + Secret Sauce = Franchise Opportunity

The restaurant business is one of the most completive markets in America due to the low barriers to entry. Matt Freidman and Adam Scott created the Wing Zone at the University of Florida in their fraternity house. The Wing Zone concept was created to fill the void of options for late night munching. Selling out the first two nights of business sealed the deal, and they began the search for a retail location.

Wing Zone Today

Today there are 100 Wing Zones in operation with another 30 under development. Wing Zone is on Entrepreneur Magazine’s franchise 500 list and booked $39 million in system-wide sales in 2006. How can two college buddies start a company of this size with no money? Have you ever let the lack of startup capital get in your way?
